Turkey Classic Contest 2010, November 13-14th

If you're a contest surfer, like to watch contests, or hate most contest altogether, then you need to come out to the 2010 Turkey Classic. After a "lay day" in 2009, its back this year bigger than ever, coming back to the Pier after a brief stint at 10th Street. PIT Surf Shop is a sponsor, we're showing our support and you should, too. One big change this year is a doubling of the prize money in the Expression Session - first place now receives $1000! That's the event to watch, where competitors are being scored on their best maneuver per heat, which usually means airs and tail wafts. Set your clocks for Nov 13-14, we'll see you at the Pier bright and early. For more info on the comp, check the website at www.christiansurfers.com

Hurricane Earl has increased to a category 4 with wind speeds of 135 mph. JORDY Smith Wins J-Bay Event #4 on ASP World Tour & Takes the lead for the 2010 Title

Jordy Smith Takes 1st Tour Win and ASP Ratings' Lead at Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay
JEFFREYS BAY, South Africa (Sunday, July 18, 2010) - Jordy Smith (ZAF), 22, has claimed his maiden ASP elite victory, taking out the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay over Adam Melling (AUS), 25, in front of his capacity hometown crowd.

Event Number 4 of 10 on the 2010 ASP World Tour, the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay was nothing but blaring Vuvuzelas and roars from the bluff as these two titans went tit-for-tat in an incredible Final exchange. The young South African proved the victor, dominating from the outset and securing an emotional first win.

"This is the best day of my life," Smith said. "The crowd on the beach has been supporting me the last few days and hearing the cheers and the Vuvuzelas just gets me fired up to perform. It feels like they're pushing me along. I couldn't have done it without them."

The most experienced surfer at Jeffreys Bay, Smith left very little to chance in the Final against Melling, opening his account with a blazing 8.90 before backing it up with some scintillating forehand surfing for a 9.03. The combination of scores (17.93 out of a possible 20) proved insurmountable for Melling.

"I knew the swell was dying and I had to take advantage of every wave that came through," Smith said. "Adam (Melling) is such a dangerous surfer. He's been in form all day and I knew that if he got the waves, he would get the scores. I went out there knowing I had to open up strong."

After taking the ratings' lead over former nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA), 38, yesterday, Smith solidified his position as the ASP World No. 1 with today's emphatic victory.

"It definitely is a different feeling," Smith said. "To be chasing the lead and defending the lead are two different things. It's a long year ahead and you can't count anyone out until it's over. I'm going to enjoy this feeling for now."

Smith's Final's berth almost never was, as the big South African was comboed by lethal Australian Bede Durbidge (AUS), 27, with four minutes remaining in their Semifinal clash. Catching two waves in under a minute, Smith unloaded a barrage of aerials and forehand blasts to claw his way back into the lead.

"I'm still not too sure what happened - it's all a blur," Smith said. "I got that first one where I did the little grab air that I didn't think was good, but the judges scored the whole wave pretty well. Then I backed it up and put everything I had into it."

Melling's "Cinderella" climb to the Finals was nothing short of sensational. Rated a lowly 41st on the ASP World Title Race rankings heading into Jeffreys Bay, the 2010 ASP Dream Tour rookie powered his way through five rounds of competition before coming short in the Final. His Runner-Up finish sees him bumped up to ASP World No. 19, well inside the safety zone for the dreaded mid-year field reduction.

"The ocean didn't cooperate with me in the Final so that's a shame but I couldn't be happier," Melling said. "We had amazing waves and to get the best result of my career is huge. I came into Jeffreys with a long road ahead if I were to make the mid-year cut-off, and now that I'm 19th, I feel like I have a bit of a buffer heading into Tahiti. I worked really hard to get here and I want to stay here."

Durbidge suffered one of the hardest losses of the event, having defeat snatched from the jaws of victory by a last-minute crusade by Smith. Despite the bitter loss, Durbidge's Equal 3rd vaults him from 10th to 7th on the ASP World Title Race rankings heading into the fifth event of the year.

"I had him comboed with only four minutes to go," Durbidge said. "He took off on that one-footer and pulled that 'Superman' air and finished off well, then came out and got another one. I think he got two waves in a minute or something. It's a hard way to lose, but Semifinals is my best result of the year and it's something to build on. The focus is on Tahiti now."

Taj Burrow (AUS), 32, consistently wowed audiences with his performance from Round 1 onwards, collecting the event's highest heat total in yesterday's Round 4. Despite today's Semifinal loss at the hands of Melling, the Western Australian moves up to ASP World No. 2 heading into Tahiti.

Highlights from the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay will be available via www.billabongpro.com/jbay10

The event will be broad LIVE on FUEL TV in Australia.

Official fores for the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay brought to you by Surfline.

A Lesson on "The Volume of your board"

Volume is basically the displacement of water that the board makes when fully submerged in water. This eguals buoyancy and this in turn determines how easily the board will be to paddle i.e. with the right amount of buoyancy your board will paddle faster through the water, not enough buoyancy and you will find it hard to get the board up to speed when paddling for a wave. There is a line where you can have too much volume so you have to be careful. Too much volume and the board will feel corky and you will not be able to bury the rails when you turn. My rule of thumb is that a little more buoyancy never hurts anyone as you see people riding boards without enough volume and their sessions are ruined as they just don't get the wave count they want.
So the key is to find the board with the right amount of volume for you. Next time you are looking for a new board, check out the volume and compare them against other boards on your shopping list. I'm sure it will give you insight on which board is right for you. We all know that choosing the right board can add so much to a great session. Come drop by the PIT and find the right board for you and the kind of surf you ride the most......

FCS Signs 2X World Champion Mick Fanning

FCS is pleased to announce the signing of dual World Champion Mick Fanning. The exclusive agreement will see the man known as ‘White Lightning’ riding the FCS systems and fins well into the future.

In 2009 a strategic move by Mick to switch from fixed fins to FCS proved beneficial in securing his second World Title. At the halfway mark of the tour Darren Handley, Mick’s shaper of 15 years, made a new quiver of boards, all of which had FCS installed.

“I’m always looking at ways to keep things fresh and moving forward, so halfway through 2009 I started experimenting with FCS and I loved it. I’ve been using them ever since”

Needless to say the new quiver of DHD’s produced some magic that ignited a remarkable competitive streak resulting in Mick winning 3 out of the last 5 World Tour events.

If Mick was not already convinced on the reliability and performance of FCS, his request to have his entire quiver of 09/10 Hawaii boards fitted with the system would prove to be ultimate test. At the end of the season Mick left

Hawaii with a second World Title, and firm in the knowledge that when it came to his equipment, FCS was the way forward.

“Overall I feel like FCS fins have a really dynamic flex and I’m getting more whip in my turns. I really like the extra flex I get through my tail and I find the system speeds up my board and reaction time”

FCS Brand Ambassador and former tour surfer Richie Lovett remarked after the agreement was signed, “Mick and FCS are a perfect fit. FCS is a technical product based on performance, and Mick is one of the most technical surfers in the world. He’s interested in fin design and he also understands the concept of how different templates, foils and fin constructions can ultimately enhance his surfing”.

Once convinced on the system Mick was keen to start working with different fin templates to gain a greater understanding of fin design and how this knowledge can play a critical role in the performance of his boards.

“I’ve started experimenting with different fins and it’s totally altered the way my boards perform. I always carry a pack of FCS fins with me because it’s fun mixing it up and having all the extra options on the same board”

Mick was equally excited about the prospect of working closely with a team of designers on a signature fin range that is scheduled to hit the market in 2011.

“Right now I’m loving working with the crew at FCS on some new signature fin designs more
specific for my surfing. The fins are going to be fast and responsive, with plenty of drive”

Mick now joins fellow stable mates Kelly Slater, CJ and Damien Hobgood, Julian Wilson, Jeremy Flores, Adriano De Souza, Owen Wright plus a host of other world class surfers on the FCS team.

ANY DAY NOW!! The Js Blak Box will be here

BLAK BOX offers a more fuller curvy outline with a higher and more defined hip pulled from the fins into a nice straight directional tail curve through to the wider tail pod. JS has spent plenty of time on this model combining old school outlines with the latest bottom curves showing off plenty of detail. Once again Jason has come through with another house favorite amongst the JS pro team for the smaller surf. The entry is super flat with a double scoop concave under the chest, leading into a deeper double concave between the fins and then a single concave exit out through the wider tail. The deck is alot flatter giving the board an overall feeling of extra forgiveness. This allows you to ride this board thinner than a normal performance board. You will find this board fast in flat sections because the extra foam has been left under your chest and the front foot. Ride this board 3-4 inches shorter than your normal shortboard. For more info click: TheBlakBox

GrindTV - Newswire: VIA ASP - SANCLEMENTE, Calif., May 8, 2010 - Gabe Kling (St. Augustine, FL), 29, won the ASP PRIME 6.0Lowers Pro over ASP Dream Tour No. 13 Chris Davidson (AUS), 33, in two-to-fourfoot surf at the famed cobblestone pointbreak of Lower Trestles after theworld's finest surfers pushed the performance barriers of competitive surfingthroughout the entire week of competition while reveling in the firing southswell. Andrew Doheny (Newport Beach, CA), 17, clinched the biggest win of hiscareer by winning the ASP Grade-2 Oakley Pro Junior.
Kling quietly navigated his way through the early rounds of competition beforegaining momentum in the final day of action. The Floridian talent unleashed afurious backhand attack on the Lowers lefthanders and combined his heats with arepertoire of powerful carves and rail gouges on his forehand to eliminatecurrent ASP Dream Tour No. 2 Jordy Smith (ZAF), 22, in their Quarterfinalsbout, and former three-time ASP World Champion Andy Irons (Hanalei, HI), 31, inthe Semifinals before taking out the 6.0 Lowers Pro title over Davidson. The Floridian regular-footer's 6.0 Lowers Pro win will help to catapult Klingto the higher rung of the ASP One World Ratings, substantially helping hischances of qualification for next year's ASP Dream Tour.

The JS Surfboards V2.1 is really easy to surf in smaller conditions. The rocker is super smooth and low and continues to maintain speed through the flat sections. JS Industries developed a variety of 5 fin boards for 2010, but in the end the VX5 was the best to put into production. The VX5 features a really flat rocker that has a full vee in the entry running through to a double concave between the fins with vee out through the tail.

New Cold Surf Gear Coming Soon!!!

Well its another glorious frigged day in St. Augustine! I think the water temperature is around 51 degrees, and the air temperature is around 40 degrees at mid-day. The water is looking pretty calm right now but there is hope in site for a little bump on Saturday. With the right equipment in the right spots there could be a fun clean wave to be had. If the storm front that's coming through on Friday generates a little power, Sunday could have stomach high plus sets with a light chop. If you need any gloves, boots, a hood or full suit we've got a fresh shipment coming in this week at the Pit. With all the new wet suit technology you barely feel the cold water. So don't miss waves just because you might get cold! Winter is one of the best times to surf around here. If you don't go out, its just more room for me!
